"Studying Ulama"

There is a long tradition of studying the learned men of Islam, the ulama, as most of our written sources have been composed and transmitted by them. This is no longer the case, and through much of the 20th century it seemed as if their social and even religious influence was on the decline. Today, this assertion seems only partially tenable. This paper discusses the current role of the ulama in Egypt and beyond, and the two areas I shall look into while in Aix, namely what I call the new madhhabiyya, and the rise of Muslim anti-Clericalism.
Jakob Skovgaard-Petersen is Professor of Islamic and Arabic studies at the University of Copenhagen. His field of research is contemporary Islam, more specifically the establishment of a modern Muslim public sphere, and the role of the Muslim ulama in modern Arab states. Lately, his research has primarily focused on the role of Islam in the new pan-Arab television networks.
